On 24 January 1950, Percy Spencer received US Patent No. 2,495,429 for a “Method of treating foodstuffs”.
The patent laid the foundation for the microwave oven and for an entirely new way of thinking about food preparation. Instead of slow heat transfer from the outside in, it described the controlled use of high frequency electromagnetic energy to heat food rapidly and efficiently.
The idea emerged from radar research, when Spencer famously noticed a chocolate bar melting in his pocket while working on active radar equipment. What followed was not just an experiment, but a protected technical concept. A method that made fast cooking predictable, repeatable, and commercially viable.
From radar laboratories to everyday kitchens, this patent shows how an unexpected observation, captured in intellectual property, can reshape daily life.
