Pēteris Skorovs
Patent Examiner | MedTech Expert | Patent History Enthusiast
Bio
I am a patent examiner with a background in biomedical engineering and medical physics, and over two decades of experience examining patent applications in the field of medical technology. My day-to-day work spans the core stages of patent examination, including prior-art searching, substantive examination and opposition proceedings.
Alongside my role as a patent examiner, I have a strong interest in patent history, with a particular focus on archival research into historical patents. Informally, I think of myself as a “Patent Archaeologist”, tracing the origins of inventions through historical patent documents, patent office files and official patent gazettes. I also assemble and digitise historical patent collections, transforming them into research datasets. My current work focuses on applying natural language processing and machine learning to historical patent documents to digitise, structure and analyse them at scale. The resulting structured data can support searching for prior art, reconstructing technological development and tracing inventive activity. In addition, I am interested in reverse-engineering and reconstructing historical inventions, bringing forgotten technical ideas back into focus in a modern context.
Beyond patents, I have a wide range of interests and pursuits, but my true passion is trail and ultra running.
My name, Pēteris Skorovs, is also commonly spelled Peteris Skorovs in English.
